I have always wanted to be a healthcare professional and improve the quality of people’s lives. However, there were so many options that I wasn’t sure which path to take. I volunteered for Make-A-Wish during the final semester of my undergraduate program. I was matched up with a child with an extreme ear condition. Hearing her story and meeting her inspired me to pursue audiology. My passion for helping others through their hearing became more apparent as I did more research. Audiology was not only a means to improve hearing and communication but also a way to restore confidence.
What previous study did you do before enrolling at UQ in audiology
Before I enrolled in the Master in Audiology Studies at UQ., I had completed a Bachelor in Science degree in Canada with a double major. Many high school students agree that choosing what university to study at can be difficult and overwhelming. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do in my career, so I chose to get a general science degree to explore my interests and keep my options open. My interest in allied healthcare led me to audiology during my undergraduate.
How does a day for an audiology student look
The day of an audiology student can vary throughout the course.
The emphasis in the first year of the degree is on theoretical knowledge. It is a great place to learn the basics and get practical experience through school screenings, observations, practicals, or a simulation clinic.
Our second and last year allowed us to improve our practical skills to apply our knowledge. We can gain direct experience at every opportunity to become future audiologists. This year’s activities include classes, industry placements at different hospitals or clinics as well as school screenings and simulations.
It is possible to have a healthy school-life balance on weekdays and weekends without course delivery. This allows us to study in the library with our classmates or grab a bite with friends. “
